Hari Raya Puasa
What is Hari Raya Puasa?
Hari Raya Puasa is a religious holiday to celebrate the end of Ramadan, a month-long period of fasting. Hari Raya Puasa is also called the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", it is celebrated by millions Muslims around the world.
When is Hari Raya Puasa?
Hari Raya Puasa begins as soon as the crescent of the new moon appears in the sky. The exact date is determined by astronomical calculation and varies per location, or is based on actual observation of the moon – then Hari Raya Puasa is celebrated the next day. In 2023, Hari Raya Puasa will probably fall on Friday, April 21st.
Celebrating Hari Raya Puasa
The Hari Raya Puasa celebrations begin the morning after the new moon is sighted. People dress in their most festive outfits to attend prayers at the mosque. There they pray and congratulate each other on the end of Ramadan, greeting one another with "Salam Aidilfitri" or "Selamat Hari Raya" (Happy Eid).
After the service, the celebration really gets started. Relatives and friends gather together, bringing special food with them. All kinds of sweet treats are an important part of the festivities and children are given money or gifts.
A new tradition: Secret Eid gift exchange
A great way to add extra joy to celebrating the end of Ramadan is to draw names for a gift exchange, this is also called a Secret Eid gift exchange. It is similar to Secret Santa, where families and friends draw names to surprise each other with gifts at Christmas. Secret Eid works the same way, except it’s celebrated during Hari Raya Puasa.
